The newspaper has plans to open the new building in 2019.
The sale of the newspapers was announced during the council’s annual news conference.
The sale of The Tampa Tribune comes at a time when the council is looking to make investments to help improve the newspaper’s print, digital and online operations.
The news conference also featured a presentation by the Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, who called the acquisition “a tremendous opportunity.”
He said the Times-unions sale will be a boost to the newspaper.
